Transferring Between Postdoc Categories

Transfer from Postdoc Associate to Postdoc Scholar

Switching from a postdoctoral associate to a postdoctoral scholar is considered a voluntary transfer. The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs (OPA) will provide instructions to postdocs and faculty mentors. Contact OPA via email at [email protected].

Transfer from Postdoc to GW Employee Status

Transfer from Postdoctoral Scholar to Postdoctoral Associate falls into voluntary transfer.

Postdocs should work with HR Business Partner on voluntary transfer requests.

Impacts on Compensation

When changing between categories of appointment, a postdoc’s compensation timing and mechanism of payment  will change. 

  • Postdoctoral associate compensation is paid at the end of the month following the GW payroll schedule.
  • Postdoctoral scholar stipends are generally paid at the beginning of the month in advance for the month following the payment. Postdoctoral scholar compensation is paid in advance for the month following the payment. Postdoctoral associate/employee compensation will be paid at the end of the month following the GW schedule, for example, postdoc scholar appointment ends on January 31st, the last stipend is paid on December 25th, and the postdoctoral associate compensation will be paid on February 25th (the dates are not exact, they are used as an example, the actual pay dates are stated by GW and could be found at https://hr.gwu.edu/payroll-calendar). The university reserves the right to make adjustments to the pay date if the pay date falls on a holiday and/or on a planned university closure. We recommend the postdocs to plan finances accordingly.
